Halloween in Everafter-Poem

Midnight creeps closer
trickling softly near,
soft strands of hair quiver
with the expectation
of a future fear.
The sickly tick, tick, tick
of the grandfather clock
rings like a thumping serenade
glistening hands pointing to the hour
laughing that it's so late
(possibly rejoicing in your fate...?).
A sound is heard.
Perhaps a bird?
No.
Simply the persistent knock, knock, knock
of small fists of wooden plank,
followed by the serenade of little voices
and the gentle rustling of dark sacks.
You dare not go near
yet the candy bowl on you lap
becons for you to hear
and heed the call of that persistent tap, tap, tap
from the children
licking lips and sharp teeth that click with every snap, snap, snap.
Your slippers shuffle towards the breach.
A sweaty hand turns the knob.
What a sight it must be
that makes you halt in a silent sob.

They are children.

Of that, at least, there is no doubt.
But something is amiss...
Did I just see a piggy-pink snout?
And what of the girls?
Why, some are missing limbs and eyes!
White pupils brightly glistening in the dim starless sky.
And...Oh dear, oh my.
They all seem to be armed tooth and nail.
Saws, swords, spiders, and plagued hands abound.
DID THAT BOY'S SHOES JUST MAKE A GROWLING SOUND?!?
Suddenly it's painfully obvious you don't belong here at all!
First night in Everafter,
and this is truly the last straw!
You throw them the candy
stumbling backwards into the hall
all the while slamming the door in mid-flight and screeching
"HERE, IT'S YOURS! YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL...!"
